Howard Stern Books

PP paperback - cover #1 PP paperback - cover #2

"Private Parts"

The book that got millions of people back to the library or into a bookstore for the first time in their lives. Howard's life and radio history, including a psychological profile of Howard. The release started some controversy in Westlaco, TX. when a librarian, Pam Antonelli, stocked the book and was fired for it. She appeared on "Donahue" with Howard and Westlaco's lawyer during this time. (Update as of 6-6-97: Ms. Antonelli later sued the city of Westlaco, and the case has been settled out-of-court. Ms. Antonelli did not get her job back.) The paperback includes another 60 or so pages which are not in the hardcover that brings the reader up to date on the happenings and reactions since the original release of the book. The paperback also has covers that show only half of Howard's face, forcing true, hard-core fans to buy two copies to get the full effect. Howard also had a number of alternate titles/covers, one of which you can see on the home page of this site. #1 on every best-seller list (except for Caldor's, who made up their own best-seller list just to remove Howard's name from their store!). The biggest book signings anyone had ever seen, for any author, up to that point. Released fall 1993. Paperback released September 1994. Howard talked about doing, but never completed, an audio version. For details on the film version of "Private Parts," check the movie page. Private Parts has now been re-released for the movie, with the movie poster as the new cover.

Miss America-front cover Miss America-back cover

"Miss America"

Howard's second book is less of a historical look and more "fooling around." Includes the infamous chapter on meeting Michael Jackson as well as Howard's foray into computer sex on "Prodigy", mental illness, phony phone callers, celebrities Howard loves, photos of Jackie's butt and photos of the phony phone callers. And, yes, the back cover photo of Howard and America's most famous acquitted murderer (right) is real, taken at Donald Trump's wedding to Marla Maples. "Miss America" was #1 on every best-seller list that counts, selling 1.4 million copies in 1996 alone. The book-signing parties were also legendary; Howard signed about 90,000 (by his estimate) copies in only five cities (NY, LA, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Cleveland). Contains color pictures of the alternate titles/covers for "Private Parts". Released November 7, 1995.
Here's an article about the release of "Miss America" from New York magazine. Here's the infamous Linda Chavez article, telling us how much she hates Howard, and why Gen. Colin Powell is such a great man. Also, here's a feature article from Dallas Morning News radio columnist Al Brumley. This article came out on November 19, 1995, for the release of "Miss America".
The "Miss America" paperback was released in October, 1996. There are three different covers on the paperback, with Howard in drag as a blonde, (truly hideous), a redhead and a brunette. Also, as an added value, there are a bunch of color photographs included that are not in the hardcover version...

Miss America was the #1 selling paperback for 1998 at www.amazon.com.

Quivers, A Life cover

"Quivers, A Life"

Read all about Robin's father molesting her, her famous 'back-door' incident, the first meeting with Howard, her flirtation with the X-rated movie business, etc. Yes, indeed, it's been quite a life! Released April 1995. Also available in an audio version. Paperback released April 1996. About the only thing not in the book is anything about Robin's affinity for high colonics. It would've been great for her to comment on the "Clump" song parody, as performed by The Presidents of the United States of America. Warning: This .wav file is very long, (zipped size is 1.7MB), so be prepared to wait a little while as it loads. Below is an ad for Robin's Dallas booksigning on June 17, 1995. Some 2,000+ people showed up, one of the largest crowds for a booksigning ever in Dallas.

cover of Dan Wagner's book
"For anyone who's ever wondered about America's #1 "shock jock," Getting To Howard is an off-beat and entertaining inside look at the fascinating world of hardcore Stern fans, and how one man's creativity and determination got him into the famous Howard Stern "Birthday Bash," onto the screen of Private Parts , and on-air with Stern. New listeners and long-time fans alike will delight in -- and maybe even relate to -- Wagner's journey from passive radio listener to actively involved fan."

from: The Philadelphia Daily News
December 11, 1998
by Rose DeWolf
Daily News Staff Writer

Dan Wagner, photographer, husband, father of two, was pretty much your average Long Island suburbanite until he began listening to the Howard Stern show.

At that point, as he himself puts it, he "took a wrong turn on the road to mental health."

Soon he wasn't just listening, he was sending Stern wacko faxes (most claiming made-up sexual adventures). And Stern read them on the air.

Now he was really hooked. Wagner says he became obsessed with the show and with the notion of meeting Stern in person -- which he finally did by crashing a Stern birthday party.

Wagner has written a funny if way-out book called "Getting to Howard -- the Odyssey of an Obsessed Howard Stern Fan" (Ilicium books, $23.95) in which he tells about meeting and photographing Stern sidekick Robin Quivers and assorted members of the "Wack Pack" -- show guests who defy rational description -- in addition to Stern.

Wagner will be appearing at three book-signings in the area tomorrow: Waldenbooks in the Cherry Hill Mall, from noon to 3 p.m.; Waldenbooks in Echelon Mall, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; and at Tower Books at 425 South St., from 7 to 9 p.m.

RD: What was the weirdest experience you had in writing the book?

DW: Meeting Jackie Martling at a book-signing. He said he would autograph anything and I gave him underwear. That inspired him to start grabbing himself, grabbing his own butt and the like. He acted like a complete fruitcake and this is the Howard Stern show's head writer.

RD: Isn't acting like a fruitcake normal on the Howard Stern show?

DW: In fact, Stern has been accused of exploiting sexual deviants and people who think they're aliens from another planet to enliven his show. In some ways, he's exploiting them, but he's also giving them attention and love they couldn't get elsewhere. And they're beating down the doors to get on the show. Personally, the misfits are the people I like best on the Stern show. I think all the people with speech impediments are a breath of fresh ear. You come to like these people for their problems.

RD: Why is Melrose Larry Green taking his pants off in the photos you took of him?

DW: Melrose will do anything for attention and that's what I was conveying. Howard calls Melrose "the Stern fan you love to hate." Every day, Melrose Larry Green stands on a street corner in Los Angeles holding up a sign that says: "Howard Stern is God." When I met him, he insisted on discussing his sex life with me. Turns out it consists of renting pornographic videotapes.

RD: Have you heard from Howard about your book?

DW: No, but my fondest hope is that he will call me to ask me to write for his TV show. I would show Jackie Martling what good writing is. Howard needs me.

cover of Paul Colford's hardcover cover of Paul Colford's paperback

New York Daily News media writer Paul Colford published an unauthorized biography of Howard in July 1996. Not the greatest effort was put forth here...I'd recommend getting it from the library. There is virtually nothing here of note, except to say that Colford has listened to every show Howard has ever done. Listen to a few "Best of Stern" shows and you'll hear all of the same things that are put forward here as "revelations." Put it this way: any long-time fan could have done the same thing.

cover of The Howard Stern Book The Howard Stern Book by Jim Cegielski. A fan's book on Howard, released in 1994. Seems somewhat dated now, with it's individual chapters on Jessica Hahn and "Fartman" as an example, but is definitely worth a look. You can order a copy by clicking on the link for the book, but you should be able to find a copy in any decent used book store. Very little of Howard's early career is here, as the author decided to focus on the WXRK years. Also includes separate chapters on each videotape Howard's made, although no mention is made of "50 Ways to Rank Your Mother," Howard's recording from the DC101 days. About 250 pages. Forward by Al "Grandpa" Lewis.

cover of Howard Stern-Big Mouth book Another fan book is Howard Stern-Big Mouth, by Jeff Menell (Pinnacle Books, 1-55817-796-5). Released in September 1993 during the furor over "Private Parts." Short, (170 pages), but to the point. This book is "out of stock indefinitely" at the publisher, but you should be able to find a copy in any decent used book store. Worth looking at for very basic information.
