Dan Wagner, photographer, husband, father of two, was pretty much your average Long Island suburbanite until he began listening to the Howard Stern show.
At that point, as he himself puts it, he "took a wrong turn on the road to mental health."
Soon he wasn't just listening, he was sending Stern wacko faxes (most claiming made-up sexual adventures). And Stern read them on the air.
Now he was really hooked. Wagner says he became obsessed with the show and with the notion of meeting Stern in person -- which he finally did by crashing a Stern birthday party.
Wagner has written a funny if way-out book called "Getting to Howard -- the Odyssey of an Obsessed Howard Stern Fan" (Ilicium books, $23.95) in which he tells about meeting and photographing Stern sidekick Robin Quivers and assorted members of the "Wack Pack" -- show guests who defy rational description -- in addition to Stern.
Wagner will be appearing at three book-signings in the area tomorrow: Waldenbooks in the Cherry Hill Mall, from noon to 3 p.m.; Waldenbooks in Echelon Mall, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; and at Tower Books at 425 South St., from 7 to 9 p.m.
RD: What was the weirdest experience you had in writing the book?
DW: Meeting Jackie Martling at a book-signing. He said he would autograph anything and I gave him underwear. That inspired him to start grabbing himself, grabbing his own butt and the like. He acted like a complete fruitcake and this is the Howard Stern show's head writer.
RD: Isn't acting like a fruitcake normal on the Howard Stern show?
DW: In fact, Stern has been accused of exploiting sexual deviants and people who think they're aliens from another planet to enliven his show. In some ways, he's exploiting them, but he's also giving them attention and love they couldn't get elsewhere. And they're beating down the doors to get on the show. Personally, the misfits are the people I like best on the Stern show. I think all the people with speech impediments are a breath of fresh ear. You come to like these people for their problems.
RD: Why is Melrose Larry Green taking his pants off in the photos you took of him?
DW: Melrose will do anything for attention and that's what I was conveying. Howard calls Melrose "the Stern fan you love to hate." Every day, Melrose Larry Green stands on a street corner in Los Angeles holding up a sign that says: "Howard Stern is God." When I met him, he insisted on discussing his sex life with me. Turns out it consists of renting pornographic videotapes.
RD: Have you heard from Howard about your book?
DW: No, but my fondest hope is that he will call me to ask me to write for his TV show. I would show Jackie Martling what good writing is. Howard needs me.

"For anyone who's ever wondered about America's #1 "shock jock," Getting To Howard is an off-beat and entertaining inside look at the fascinating world of hardcore Stern fans, and how one man's creativity and determination got him into the famous Howard Stern "Birthday Bash," onto the screen of Private Parts , and on-air with Stern. New listeners and long-time fans alike will delight in -- and maybe even relate to -- Wagner's journey from passive radio listener to actively involved fan."

The Howard Stern Book by Jim Cegielski. A fan's book on Howard, released in 1994. Seems somewhat dated now, with it's individual chapters on Jessica Hahn and "Fartman" as an example, but is definitely worth a look. You can order a copy by clicking on the link for the book, but you should be able to find a copy in any decent used book store. Very little of Howard's early career is here, as the author decided to focus on the WXRK years. Also includes separate chapters on each videotape Howard's made, although no mention is made of "50 Ways to Rank Your Mother," Howard's recording from the DC101 days. About 250 pages. Forward by Al "Grandpa" Lewis.
Another fan book is Howard Stern-Big Mouth, by Jeff Menell (Pinnacle Books, 1-55817-796-5). Released in September 1993 during the furor over "Private Parts." Short, (170 pages), but to the point. This book is "out of stock indefinitely" at the publisher, but you should be able to find a copy in any decent used book store. Worth looking at for very basic information.
There's a new Howard Stern book, Howard Stern A to Z, by Luigi Lucaire. I haven't seen it yet, if you do, drop me a line and let me know how it is. The reviews on Amazon say it's terrible.
