Dropping Stern makes WBBL all sports again

By Brian Vanochten

A little more than two years after all-sports station WBBL-AM (1340) pulled it from its morning lineup, ESPN's "Mike &Mike in the Morning" has returned to the local sports leader.

It replaced the controversial "Howard Stern Show" earlier this week.

The switch, which occurred when parent company Citadel Broadcasting instructed its affiliates to pull Stern's nationally syndicated program from the air until a dispute over the shock jock's content has been resolved, might not be permanent. Even so, WBBL program director Bret Bakita is pleased about the change.

"I feel that we've come back to our roots," Bakita said of bringing back "Mike &Mike in the Morning," which had been bumped from the WBBL lineup Dec. 20, 2002, to make room for Stern's show when it moved from sister station WKLQ-FM.

"We're back to being a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week sports product. These are the moves we want to make to make us a stronger sports station," he said.

Citadel chief operating officer Judy Ellis told The Press there is no timetable for Stern's return to its affiliates.

In either case, it appears WBBL is prepared to install "Mike &Mike in the Morning" as a permanent fixture in its morning lineup when Stern's contract with Citadel expires later this year.

"I'm moving forward with the plan I have for sports radio in this market," Bakita said.

That plan includes another significant change.

Earlier this week, WBBL, which has agreements with both ESPN Radio and Fox Sports radio for syndicated programming, dumped Fox's Van Earl Wright in the 10 a.m. to noon time slot and picked up ESPN's "The Herd with Colin Cowherd."

Cowherd replaced the "Tony Kornheiser Show" last fall.

The rest of WBBL's lineup remains intact.

Bakita is proudest of the return of "Mike & Mike" since it has gained in popularity while being simulcast over ESPNEWS weekday mornings from 6-10 a.m.

"It's a vastly improved product," he said of the show that features ESPN anchor Mike Greenberg and gregarious ESPN pro and college football analyst Mike Golic. "It has become the strongest syndicated show on ESPN Radio."

In addition, Bakita said WBBL plans to implement twice-per-hour local sports breaks spotlighting local and state teams during the "Mike &Mike" program from 7-9 a.m. He'll anchor those updates himself, plus the station will provide local traffic and weather reports throughout the morning, he said.

"We just couldn't do that before with Howard Stern," Bakita said.

Howard Stern yanked from local station

By Troy Reimink

GRAND RAPIDS -- Radio personality Howard Stern is off the air in West Michigan.

WBBL-AM (1340) stopped broadcasting Stern's syndicated morning talk show Monday, the day Stern was due back from vacation, and it is unclear whether the show will return.

Representatives of Las Vegas-based Citadel Communications -- which owns WBBL -- would not comment.

In 2004, Stern signed with Sirius, a satellite-radio provider that will begin airing his program in January 2006. On the air, Stern has made no secret of his eagerness to leave broadcast radio.

Citadel reportedly objected to Stern's constant use of broadcast-radio air-time "to essentially do an infomercial for Sirius," said a local company spokesman, who declined to be identified.

Inside Radio, an industry trade publication, reported Tuesday that Citadel CEO Farid Suleman had declared "war" on Stern, sending him a bill for $200,000 worth of alleged advertising for Sirius.

In Stern's place, WBBL is running the "Mike &Mike in the Morning" show, nationally syndicated by ESPN.

Stern has been at odds for years with the Federal Communications Commission and broadcast-decency advocates, and the past year was particularly eventful.

Early last year, radio giant Clear Channel dropped Stern's show in six markets after it adopted more rigid decency standards.

An e-mail to Stern representatives was not returned Tuesday. Karen Mateo, director of communications for Infinity, declined to comment.

Stern's show has been on local Citadel-owned stations since 1996. The show maintained strong ratings on WBBL, placing fourth during its time slot among men ages 18 to 49. It was the highest-rated morning show on AM.

Stern's show ran nationwide on four Citadel stations, all of which have pulled it from the air.

CITADEL has not restored HOWARD STERN's show to its stations in SYRACUSE, PROVIDENCE, NEW BEDFORD, GRAND RAPIDS, and HARRISBURG upon his return from vacation. OPIE AND ANTHONY tapes continue on WAQX (95X)/SYRACUSE, while afternoon host NIPSEY has moved to mornings at WQXA (105.7 THE X)/HARRISBURG.

STERN said on his MONDAY (1/3) show that CITADEL boss FARID SULEMAN ("a weird dude," according to STERN) is asking for payment of $200,000. from STERN for the host's mentioning SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO on his syndicated show. STERN said that he and his agent DON BUCHWALD were baffled by the move and said he would have understood if SULEMAN had asked to get out of the company's contract early. "Is this to teach me a lesson? Because it's clearly not working," STERN said about the CITADEL move, noting that "I was nothing but nice to (SULEMAN)" but professing not to care.

Stern's sudden disappearance due to technical glitch, local station says

Admitting the timing was "suspicious and unfortunate," local Citadel Broadcasting general manager Matt Hanlon said Monday's absence of the syndicated "The Howard Stern Show" from WBBL-AM (1340) was due to a technical snafu.

"It will be back (Tuesday) at the regular time," Hanlon said late Monday.

The show was back on the air this morning. It show airs from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Since the controversial show was axed last week from a half-dozen Clear Channel-owned stations around the country for content concerns, local Stern loyalists must have wondered whether the same thing happened here.

Hanlon said the technical problem was with the show's audio feed line somewhere between Stern's New York City studios and Grand Rapids.

"We get the program off the bird (satellite), but there are (land) lines involved to get to and from," he said. "It does happen from time to time and, usually, they catch it right away. But with everything else going on and current events, I guess they just missed it."

The station got "hundreds of calls" from Stern listeners wondering where the program was, Hanlon said. Instead of Stern, WBBL aired the syndicated "Mike & Mike Show" from ESPN Radio -- the talk show the sports station featured before Stern was moved from sister station WKLQ-FM (94.5) more than a year ago.

Hanlon did say a local signal "delay" device is being installed for the Stern broadcast. That will allow the station to delete content it deems to be indecent, he said.

"Citadel has a zero-tolerance policy on indecency," Hanlon said.

But the numerous phone calls prove Stern has his listeners. The "shock jock's morning show is among the top three rated in the market with male listeners age 18 to 49," he said.

After three weeks off the air, Stern morning show is back on 1340 AM

By Terry Deboer

Howard Stern has returned to Grand Rapids radio.

The morning show of the nationally syndicated host began re-airing this morning on WBBL-AM (1340) after a more than three-week absence.

"It's been a drama that has been playing out, and we finally have a resolve on it," said Matt Hanlon, general manager of the local Citadel Broadcasting station group.

The Stern program had been pre-empted by contract difficulties, partially resulting from Hanlon's switch of the show from sister Citadel station WKLQ-FM (94.5) to 'BBL in December.

"We wanted to put Howard on 1340, and we did it," Hanlon said of the move. "That provoked some negotiations with the Stern camp which were resolved today."

Hanlon said the resolution enables his long-term plan for the Stern program -- to offer it as a more general-interest morning show for WBBL's all-sports format.

Stern, like the sports station, largely attracts male listeners.

Reaction from fans of the "shock jock" is mixed. Hardcore Stern-ites are glad to have him back in whatever setting. But 'BBL's limited signal has a much smaller broadcast footprint than 'KLQ's.

"I guess it's good news, but I'm kind of disappointed it went back on AM," said Keith Walker of Wayland.

"It seems like a step down for the show," said Walker, who wanted Stern put back on WKLQ.

Walker has difficulty receiving WBBL's 1,000-watt signal at his home near the Allegan-Barry county line. He had no such problem when Stern was on the FM frequency.

"I'm subscribing to a service that sends you the show on CD," said Walker, 36, who gets a month's worth of Stern programs on a single disc.

"I'll probably have to keep getting it, because I like the show well enough that I want make sure I hear the whole thing."

Meanwhile, Hanlon is braced to hear from sports fan who would rather have morning sports programming on WBBL.

Late Tuesday, WBBL afternoon-drive host Bill "Huge" Simonson revealed to his audience the news of Stern's impending return.

Hanlon now can focus on retooling WKLQ's morning show, which he said will soon roll out a series of guest hosts from which a permanent replacement will be named. Simonson told his "Huge Show" listeners that he likely will be one of the candidates.

Rock-radio listenership numbers fall in the fall

BROADCASTNOTES --Terry DeBoer

One local radio programmer has a theory about rock music station ratings during autumn.

"Fall, for rock radio, is usually the worst 'book' in the year," noted Brent Alberts, program director of classic rock outlet WLAV-FM (96.9).

Ratings numbers -- often referred to as simply "the book" -- from the fall quarter of 2002 have been released by the Arbitron Corp., and they do appear to reflect a quarter-to-quarter trend for listeners age 12 and older: downward for rock-oriented formats such as 'LAV, WGRD-FM (97.9) and WKLQ-FM (94.5).

Meanwhile, Arbitron-tracked trends were up for adult contemporary stations such as WOOD-FM (105.7), WLHT-FM (95.7) and WTRV-FM (100.5).

Alberts has noted the same falling "fall rock" trend at his previous stations, including one in Nashville that he left last year to come to Grand Rapids.

"Looking at the history, that doesn't affect Grand Rapids as much. But I really don't know why it is," Alberts noted.

WLAV's overall market-share number slipped from 7.3 to 6.4, although still good for third place among the area's commercial stations. The bright spot was the station's reconfigured morning show featuring Tony Gates and company.

Alberts reports the morning-drive program is tops in the ratings for men ages 25 to 54 and are the highest they've been in a year for all of the 25-54 cohort.

"That 25-to-54 is the money market we target," he noted of the demographic's appeal to advertisers.

Alternative rock WGRD fell from fourth to seventh overall in the fall book.

"In our target 'demo' of persons (age) 18 to 34, in middays, we're first. And mornings, we're second," noted program director Bobby Duncan.

"While extremely strong in 'at-work' listening, 'GRD still has challenges at night and on the weekends ... This is a war, and there are many battles along the way," Duncan said.

Classic rock WBFX-FM (101.3) bucked the rock station trend by inching up to a 4.0, which tied its highest rating since it switched to classic rock in the fall of 2000.

Meanwhile, the adult contemporary WLHT-FM (W-LITE) jumped from eighth to sixth in total listeners, with the Dave &Geri morning show flexing its muscles with females.

"Ask me how happy we are," quipped Geri Jarvis after seeing the show come in tops with women ages 25-64 and second in adults 25 to 54.

Also rising was sister Regent-owned station The River (WTRV-FM), which pulled a 4.2, its highest rating since the fall of 2001.

Although Clear Channel stations -- country WBCT-FM (93.7) and contemporary hit WSNX-FM (104.5) -- were down somewhat, both remained number one and two in the rankings.

A strong performance by Clear Channel-owned WOOD-FM and news-talk WOOD-AM (1300) gave the corporate broadcasting giant four out of the top five rated stations in the Grand Rapids market.

News developments naturally help the ratings of news-oriented WOOD, according to program director Phil Tower.

"The election in November helped," he said of the listener increase that moved it from sixth to fifth place. "And Sean Hannity did well, with sizable increases in all demos."

WOOD is tops in all adults 35 and older and is the only AM station in the top 10. Other stations that moved up at least slightly include WJQK-FM, WFGR-FM, WBBL-AM and WFUR-FM. Among those with slight to moderately lower ratings were WODJ-FM, WVTI-FM, WMJH-AM and WJNZ-AM.

The market's top 10

Following are overall ratings numbers for the top 10 area commercial radio stations as compiled by the Arbitron Corp. from listener diaries in Kent and Ottawa counties for the fall quarter of 2002 (the rating period ended Dec. 12). The ratings number refers to a percentage of listeners age 12 and older (based on a 12-and-older population of 666,000 and an "ethnic composition" of 6.0 percent black, 3.6 percent Hispanic and 1.6 percent Asian). Noncommercial and community stations such as WBLV-FM and WCSG-FM are not included. The first number after each station is from the fall, the second (in parentheses) is from the summer quarter 2002.

WBCT-FM -- 9.6 (9.9)
WSNX-FM -- 6.8 (8.1)
WLAV-FM -- 6.4 (7.3)
WOOD-FM -- 5.7 (4.9)
WOOD-AM -- 5.5 (5.1)
WLHT-FM -- 5.2 (4.6)
WGRD-FM -- 5.0 (6.4)
WKLQ-FM -- 4.7 (5.8)
WTRV-FM -- 4.2 (3.7)
WBFX-FM -- 4.0 (3.8)

It appears that the Howard Stern morning show has lost its second Grand Rapids home in under a month.

Sports WBBL-AM 1340 had been airing the show after it was moved off of Active Rock WKLQ-FM 94.5 in late December- this week the program has also stopped airing on WBBL.

The program syndicator has prevented the show from airing on AM 1340 as a direct result of the show being bumped off FM 94.5- which had the original contract to air it.

WKLQ/WBBL owner Citadel is negotiating for Stern's return to WBBL, which might or might not happen any day.

Stern warning: Howard's off the air right now

By Terry Deboer
The Grand Rapids Press

Keith Walker is missing his morning fix of the "Howard Stern Show."

"It's become part of my life," said the Wayland-area resident who has been listening to the nationally syndicated radio host since 1992.

"It's a reason to jump out of bed in the morning instead of dragging yourself out of bed; to see what's on the Stern show each day," said Walker, 36.

The "shock jock" has been aired locally on WKLQ-FM (94.5) for the past eight years -- until late December, that is, when station officials switched it to sister station WBBL-AM (1340), a sports-talk station.

Walker lives near Gun Lake, which is too far from Grand Rapids to pick up the AM station's weaker, pre-sunrise signal.

"About two hours after sunrise the show would start to come in, but it was real staticky," said Walker, who spends much of his workday driving truck and listening to the radio.

This week the show has been absent entirely from local airwaves, leaving Walker and many other Stern fans bewildered.

Matt Hanlon, general manager of the local Citadel Broadcasting group, which includes both stations, said the reason there's been no Stern show in Grand Rapids is "contract renegotiations."

"That's nothing I had intended upon," said Hanlon, who only learned of the development over the weekend.

"It's coming out of corporate (Citadel hierarchy), and multiple markets, and that's why the situation is the way it is," Hanlon said of talks with representatives of the New York-based Stern, who is on about 50 stations nationwide.

"I was led to believe it was done, but apparently it's not," Hanlon said. "But I have to play this thing out, and it's out of my hands."

Stern's current contract with Citadel began as a multiyear renewal in mid-2001.

Although Hanlon said they were attempting to "expedite" the matter, it's been going on a day-to-day basis -- they could settle it tomorrow, or next week, he said. There's been no agreement to air the show in the interim.

Stern's agent, Don Buchwald, did not reply to by phone or e-mailed messages.

Meanwhile, local Stern fans, including Walker, have already contacted local Citadel officials requesting the return of Stern's program. He can tell you the stations in Chicago and Detroit that carry the show -- both too far away to reach Grand Rapids fans.

There's no Internet streaming, either.

"I won't go without that show," said the married father of three.

"I found a recording service that you can pay that will send you the shows every month or so on CD-ROM -- I'll have to listen to the show a month behind."

Hanlon said he remains committed to making Stern fit on WBBL, where the show would be part of a lineup of sports-talk hosts.

So far this week, the station has been airing the ESPN Radio "Mike & Mike" show from 6 to 10 a.m.

Howard Stern show switches stations in GR, now on WBBL-AM

By Terry Deboer
The Grand Rapids Press

It's still not certain exactly what morning drive on radio station WKLQ-FM (94.5) will sound like in its "post-Howard Stern" era.

Last month, the program of the nationally syndicated Stern was moved from the rock music outlet to a sister station, WBBL-AM (1340).

"But regardless of what happens, the brand will not be compromised," said Matt Hanlon, Citadel Broadcasting's Grand Rapids general manager, of 'KLQ's music focus.

"It's the rock '94 dot five,' and it's about the music."

Since the Stern switch, former nighttime host Tom "The Wiz" has been handling mornings on the station, keeping his show music-intensive.

"It's definitely a fluid situation. We're keeping our eyes open," Hanlon said of the long-term plans for the morning show.

"I really think that 'KLQ, with its 19-year history in the market, really needs to find the next Tony Gates, so that we can have a morning guy who can grow with 'KLQ's audience."

Gates is the long-time morning host at fellow Citadel station WLAV-FM (96.9).

Stern has been on WKLQ since 1996, and often has led morning show ratings for young adult male listeners. The contract of the "shock jock" was renewed more than 18 months ago. Hanlon said the station is "navigating through things" with provisions regarding the Stern move to the sports-talk AM-1340.

Hanlon said the switch is a long-term plan to help both stations.

"WBBL should quadruple its ratings," said Hanlon of the expected move of Stern fans to the AM station.

"People would follow Stern into a tree house, and that audience should be recycled throughout the day as a lot of people are exposed to 1340 for the first time," he added.

Hanlon points to the success of WFAN-AM in New York, a sports-talk station that carries the general-interest Don Imus show during the morning drive.

"And 'KLQ has been one of the most successful rock stations in this town for 19 years, and it can stand on its own," he said.

Hanlon said he's heard the rumors suggesting former 'KLQ and WGRD-FM (97.9) morning show hosts Rick Beckett and Scott Winters would be returning to 'KLQ. Both left 'GRD last year.

"I've never met Rick Beckett ... I'll have to look him up," Hanlon said with a laugh.

The general manager last week celebrated his one-year anniversary at the helm of the Grand Rapids Citadel group.

"There's a plan in place, and we're working it," he said.

January 6:

Fans of Howard Stern's morning show in Grand Rapids had to once again tune to Sports WBBL-AM 1340 to hear the program as it didn't return to Active Rock WKLQ-FM 94.5 this morning. It was expected that Stern's move to 'BBL was only to be while the show was in "Best of" mode during the holidays and it would be back on 'KLQ with this morning's live show. Stern was still listed as KLQ's morning host on the station's website as of this morning. It's uncertain if the move is permanent or just an experiment.
