The Stern-fans mailing list

Dateline: Aug. 30, 1998 - the "Stern-fans" mailing list: "stern-rules" reincarnated!

This is the reincarnation of the old "stern-rules" mailing list. Stern-rules went away in the fall of 1997 when the admin disappeared without warning or notification. At one time stern-rules was the premiere Howard Stern mailing list on the 'net. Thanks to Nick for bringing it back...let's see if we can make it what it once was, again.

If you are interested in communication with fans only in a no-flames environment, send email to: stern-fans-request@scifi.squawk.com with just the word subscribe in the message body. Leave the subject line blank.
You'll receive a response asking you to verify your intentions. Follow those directions.

And please, this is a mailing list, so if you get a new email address, please keep messages from bouncing and re-subscribe yourself from the list, OK?

The Yahoo! Groups Howard Stern mailing list

There's another Howard Stern mail list out there now. It runs from Yahoo! now that Yahoo! bought out onelist.com. You can subscribe to this Howard Stern list here. It would seem the list rules are a little draconian. However, some of you may like that. There also isn't much traffic here.

The Usenet newsgroups

Go ahead. Post your butt off.

  1. alt.fan.howard-stern
The place to talk about Howard on the Internet. Who knows, Howard claims to read the group, maybe you'll hear your post on the show someday! To the best of everyone's knowledge, Howard probably has never posted there.
And please don't post your binary files here.

    *****
I just added the following to the FAQ:

On June 13, 1996, Howard announced that he had articles from alt.fan.howard-stern converted to Lotus Notes messages by Jeff Schick of IBM. So if you write it here, he will probably read it. Be interesting, use complete sentences, spell correctly, get to the point quickly, and use a meaningful subject.
    Thanks to: Nick.

  2. alt.binaries.howard-stern   The alt.binaries.howard-stern FAQ.
Post your binaries here. This group was created in early 1996. Here's where you'll find lots of waves, pics, etc., from the show. The show is also posted here, in it's entirety, every day.

  3. alt.fan.howard-stern.fartman
Someone started this group back when Howard was going make the "Adventures of Fartman" movie. Since that endeavor never really got off the ground, neither did this group. Except with AOL'ers. They love it!

  4. alt.politics.howard-stern
Somebody started this group when Howard was making his abortive run for Governor of New York, and it has since died down almost to extinction.

January 1999 - New Groups Dedicated to Bababooey, Jackie and Stuttering John!

I have no idea what purpose these three groups serve, other than to simply exist, since there's probably no topics to discuss in them that cannot be handled by alt.fan.howard-stern. Nevertheless, here they are, linked for your enjoyment. And where's the group for Robin?

  5. alt.fan.bababooey

  6. alt.fan.jackie-jokeman

  7. alt.fan.stuttering-john

If you don't have access to them, holler at your ISP's Usenet admin to get them added!

(While those procedures are fine if you know your way around the Internet fairly well, for even more IRC info, The IRC page is available with complete instructions, recent changes, downloading software, finding server's and logging on.)

Don't forget Internet Relay Chat (IRC)! A couple of channels to look for would be #stern-rules or #stern on EFNet. Lately, everyone has been meeting in #stern-rules at 8pmET/7pmCT on Saturday evenings. Most of the time they'll be busiest in the am when Howard is on, but there have been other times when fans will get together there just to talk. Or create your own channel, just put in a decent title so others can find you. For those of you who aren't sure what IRC even is, here's a short background article that sums it up very well.

Howard's WWW page update! In the "TVGuide" with Howard on the cover, (dated March 8-14, 1997), Howard says he's working on his WWW page, that he "has it on his computer and is testing it." You can access HowardStern.com here.

Thanks to Clay and the New York Post - September 5, 1996. Fans will spot the errors and lack of research in this article, (it is the NY Post, after all), and we'll see how this plays out.

STERN COMPETITION

Internet services in battle to sign "King of All Media"

By John Motavalli

The on line world may soon embark on a bidding war over Howard Stern.

"We have been having conversations with online ppl at the present time. That I can tell you, says Don Buchwald," Stern's agent.

Buchwald, who worked out of a Manhattan firm called Buchwald Associates, [Ed.-Don Buchwald owns Buchwald Associates.] is talking to three online services, which have been flying him out to meet with top executives, he says. A full scale official Stern area would be a magnet for on line subscribers. Buchwald says, "Like everything else, it needs a draw." Buchwald says of the commercial online services bidding for Stern's involvement.

Buchwald wouldn't name the 3 services, but AOL says it is interested in Stern. CompuServe and MSN are also said to be in the running.

Prodigy maintains three Howard Stern chat rooms devoted nightly to the popular talk radio star, with frequent participation by Stern, according to spokeswoman Carol Wallace. She notes that Stern's book, Private Parts, [Ed.-it was "Miss America."] coming out in paperback in October devotes 30 of the first 40 pages to Prodigy.

There's also a Stern Fanclub bulletin board. To get there enter 'radio' as a jump word and then select "Howard Stern Fanclub."

He talks about Prodigy all the time on the air, notes John Colston, who heads AOL's entertainment content group. "We love that guy. We think Howard is contrary to Prodigy's image."

Prodigy has about one million subscribers, while AOL has more than 5 million. Colston says that Stern's fan club presence is one of the factors insuring that Prodigy is "still there."

AOL has used Stern sidekick 'Stuttering John' as a guest and "we had a great turnout," Colston says.

Prodigy advertises on Stern's radio program carried locally on WXRK-FM, says Barry Kluger, Prodigy spokesman. The Stern bulletin board was "not official," he says.

Still, Prodigy's Howard Stern Fanclub bulletin board is alive with Stern action. A note posted by Pat Gender (YLYG37B@prodigy.com) guessing the salaries earned by Stern an sidekicks got 72 replies. "Hey, Howard, I know you'll read this!!" Gender exclaims.

Gender claims that Stern makes $5 million a year, while co-host Robin Quivers rakes in $1.2 million and Stuttering John nets a mere $65,000.

Stern has a Prodigy address, LINK97A, but as of Tuesday there were no recent postings by Stern. [Ed.- I'm sure it's been changed as of Wednesday!]

In general, the Stern Fanclub bulletin board was a bit cleaner than one would expect, [Ed.-because Prodigy censors posts for language.] although there is some obscenity. The area mostly serves as a forum for ppl obsessing about various arcane Stern-isms, and carries such information as an announcement of a Stern Party planned for Atlantic City's Planet Hollywood Nov. 3.

The bad news for Prodigy is that members of the Stern Fan club have set up an Internet Relay Chat, or IRC area on the Internet. Visitors can go there at irc.iadfw.net or irc.airmail.net with special mIRC software.

The World Wide Web is also alive with Stern rites. A query via the AltaVista search engine found 60,000 references to Stern. These included stand-alone sites like "Howard Stern's Unofficial Private Parts" the "Howard Stern Look-A-Like Page" and the "Howard Stern Photo Gallery."

There are also three [Ed.-they're listed above] Stern Usenet Newsgroups, including alt.fan.howard-stern which had 2685 messages in it Tuesday.
